Kubišta, Bohumil
Kubišta, Bohumil (1884–1918). Czech painter and graphic artist. He was born at Vlčkovice in Bohemia and studied in Prague and Florence. In 1907 he was one of the founders of the avant-garde Prague group The Eight (2), and in 1909 he visited Paris; this turned his art decisely towards Cubism, of which he became one of the leading Czech exponents. In 1911 Kirchner and Müller met Kubišta when they visited Prague and invited him to become a ‘corresponding member’ of Die Brücke. Poverty forced him to join the army in 1913, and just as he was beginning to achieve some material security and had decided to go back to art full-time, he died in the influenza epidemic of 1918.
