Bloemfontein

Bloemfontein, Free State/South Africa Founded as a fort in 1846 with the name that can be translated as ‘Fountain of Flowers’ from the Afrikaans bloem ‘flower’. However, it may have been named after himself by Jan Bloem, a Griqua leader who lived on a farm here before the Voortrekkers arrived. It is also known locally as Mangaung, with the Isotho meaning of ‘Place of Leopards’.
