Biblia pauperum

Biblia pauperum

Biblia pauperum (Latin: ‘poor man's bible’). A type of late medieval picture book for elementary instruction about the Bible, showing in pictures (with short explanatory texts) how the principal events from the life of Christ are prefigured in the Old Testament (see typology); in effect it was a Bible ‘rendered in a compressed and popular manner that might supply poor preachers of no great intellectual attainment with material for their sermons and with pictures which could be shown to simple and unlettered folk’ (Cambridge History of the Bible, vol. ii, 1969). The Biblia pauperum is thought to have originated in the mid-13th century in south Germany or Austria. There are about 80 manuscript examples surviving from the 14th century and about a dozen block book editions were published in the 15th century, originally in the Netherlands. Images from the book were copied and adapted in sculpture, tapestries, stained glass, and easel paintings. Unlike the Speculum humanae salvationis, the Biblia pauperum is strictly scriptural, with no historical or secular subjects among its types.

Biblia Pauperum

Biblia Pauperum (Lat., ‘the Bible of poor people’). Though also used to describe various short biblical summaries for elementary education, the title came to denote specifically a picture-book in which on each page a set group of figures illustrates a NT antitype flanked by two corresponding OT types, with short explanatory texts from the Bible and mnemonic verses.
