Bhārhut
Bhārhut. Site in Madhya Pradesh, India, of one of the earliest stūpas built on a mound which dates back to the Mauryan period. It was constructed around 100 bce, which is before the first images of the Buddha are found, and is decorated with carvings of trees and yakṣa figures. Many of the carvings are preserved in the Calcutta Museum.

Bhārhut
Bhārhut. In Madhya Pradesh, this is the earliest surviving Buddhist stūpa. Based on a Mauryan relic mound, the stūpa was decorated in the Śuṅga period, about 100 BCE.
