Rubens, Bernice (Ruth)
Rubens, Bernice (Ruth) (1928–2004), novelist, born and educated in Cardiff. Her first novel, Set on Edge (1960), was followed by Madame Sousatzka (1962), in which the piano teacher of the title, who lives in an eccentric household in Vauxhall, struggles to keep possession of child prodigy Marcus Crominski. Her many other works include The Elected Member (1969, Booker Prize 1970), which is the sombre story of an orthodox Jewish family: drug-addicted, mentally disturbed and much-loved scapegoat son Norman Zweck brings sorrow to his widower father, Rabbi Zweck, to his unmarried sister Bella, and to his sister Esther, who has married out. Spring Sonata (1979) is the story of a musically gifted unborn child refusing to confront the prospect of its own birth. Later works include A Solitary Grief (1991), in which psychiatrist Alistair Crown finds himself literally unable to face his Down's syndrome daughter, and The Waiting Game (1997), a macabre tale of old age set in an old people's home.
