Bernardo Daddi , fl. 1312-48, Italian painter of the Florentine school. First influenced by his contemporary Giotto, he soon adopted the delicate line and lyrical expression of the Sienese painters, especially the Lorenzetti. Among his dated works are a triptych (1328) in the Uffizi and an altarpiece (1333) in the Ospedale Bigallo, Florence. In the United States there are numerous paintings attributed to Daddi. These include panels of the Madonna and Child in the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.; the Walters Art Gallery, Baltimore; and the Gardner Museum, Boston.

Bibliography: See R. Offner, A Corpus of Florentine Painting (Sec. III: Vol. III, 1930; Vol. VIII, 1958); G. Andres et al., The Art of Florence (2 vol., 1989).

Daddi, Bernardo (d ?Florence, 1348). Florentine painter, the outstanding painter in Florence in the period after the death of Giotto (who was possibly his teacher). Daddi ran a busy workshop specializing in small devotional panels and portable altarpieces—types that he helped to popularize. His signed and dated works include a polyptych of the Crucifixion with Eight Saints (1348, Courtauld Gal., London), and the works attributed to him include frescos of the martyrdoms of Sts Lawrence and Stephen in S. Croce. His style—a sweetened version of Giotto's, combining firm draughtsmanship with lightness and grace—was influential into the second half of the century.
