Bering Island
Bering Island, Russia Named after the Danish‐born ship's captain Vitus Bering† who died on the island. Peter I the Great† appointed him in 1724 as the leader of an expedition to see if Asia and North America were joined by land. The Bering Sea (in Russian, Beringovo More), the Bering Strait (Proliv Beringa), and the town of Beringovskiy, previously Ugol′niy from ugol′ ‘coal’, are also named after him.

Bering Island
Bering Island , Rus. Beringa, largest of the Komandorski Islands , c.55 mi (90 km) long and up to c.15 mi (20 km) wide, off Kamchatka peninsula, E Russian Far East, in the Bering Sea. It is low and treeless and is subject to severe windstorms. Nikolskoye is the chief town. Vitus Bering , sailing in the St. Peter, was shipwrecked and died there. |
