Bergognone, Ambrogio (or Ambrogio Borgognone) ( Ambrogio da Fossano) (b ?Fossano, c.1455; d Milan, 21 May 1523). Italian painter, active mainly in and around Milan. He is one of the best examples of the continuance of a native Milanese tradition into the 16th century, for unlike so many of his Lombard contemporaries he was virtually unaffected by the art of Leonardo. On the other hand, he was open to influence from Netherlandish painting and his nickname (meaning ‘Burgundian’) may indicate that he spent some time in northern Europe. His style is static and undramatic, aiming at a typically late quattrocento mood of devotional calm, which is often enhanced by pale landscape backgrounds of great delicacy. He was fairly prolific as a painter of both frescos (notably at the Certosa di Pavia) and altarpieces; there are examples of his work in several churches in Milan and in numerous public collections, including the National Gallery, London. His brother Bernardino (c.1460–c.1524), likewise known as Bergognone, was also a painter and sometimes worked as Ambrogio's assistant.
