Bent's Fort
Bent's Fort, trading post on the Arkansas River near Rocky Ford, Colo., was founded (c.1829) by frontiersmen Charles and William Bent. A new fort was built (1853) downstream and leased (1859) to the government for a military post. Its appearance and life during the 1840s figure in many travel accounts, such as Parkman's The Oregon Trail, Ruxton's Life in the Far West, and Garrard's Wah‐to'‐yah.
