Belshazzar
Belshazzar Incorrectly asserted in Dan. 5: 2 to be the son of Nebuchadnezzar and last king of Babylon. Cuneiform inscriptions found at Ur, however, show that he was the son of Nabonidus of Babylon (556–539 BCE) and that he ruled as regent during the king's absence. The story in the book is of a feast given by Belshazzar during which a mysterious hand writes a legend of doom on the wall and he is slain that very night—a drama that has inspired many paintings and some great music (e.g. William Walton's oratorio).

Belshazzar
Belshazzar In the Old Testament, the son of Nebuchadnezzar and last king of Babylon. The Book of Daniel relates how Belshazzar organized a great feast during which a disembodied hand wrote upon the wall, “Mene, mene tekel upharsin”. Daniel translated it as “Thou art weighed in the balance and found wanting.” and said it signified Babylon's downfall. Modern archaeological investigations identified Belshazzar with Bel-shar-usur (d.539 bc), the son of Nabonidus, King of Babylon (556–539 bc).

Belshazzar
Belshazzar (6th century BC) Son of Nebuchadnezzar and last king of Babylon. According to the Bible (Dan. 5), he was killed in the sack of the city and his doom was foretold by writing which appeared on the walls of his palace at a great banquet. In inscriptions and documents from Ur, however, he was perhaps the grandson of Nebuchadnezzar and the son of Nabonidos, last king of Babylon, and did not himself reign.

Belteshazzar
Belteshazzar At the king's court Daniel (Dan. 1: 7) accepted this Babylonian name without protest, though it appears to incorporate a prayer to the god Bel (Marduk, Isa. 46: 1), which seems inconsistent with his strict adherence to food regulations (Dan. 1: 8).
