Beauharnois is at the eastern outlet of the Beauharnois Canal, part of the St. Lawrence Seaway System, and is the site of a large hydroelectric development. , 1670-1749, French governor of New France (1726-46). Despite the loss (1745) of Louisburg to the British, which led to his replacement, Beauharnois's rule was generally peaceful and prosperous. He returned (1747) to France and served as a naval official. Read more
