beatification. In the RC Church, the act by which the Pope permits the public veneration after death of a Catholic in parts of the Church. Such a person receives the title ‘Blessed’. See also CANONIZATION.

Beatification. In the Roman Catholic Church, the penultimate stage in the process which leads to the canonization of a saint. A person who has been beatified receives the title of ‘Blessed’.
