Battle of the Pyrenees

Pyrenees, battle of the

Pyrenees, battle of the, 1813. Following Wellington's offensive in the spring of 1813, Marshal Soult's army of 88,000 men attempted to lift the siege of the French-held towns of San Sebastián and Pamplona in northern Spain. The series of actions that resulted are known as the battle of the Pyrenees. Soult achieved surprise and forced small British forces to retire from the key mountain passes at Maya and Roncesvalles on 25 July. Wellington met Soult at Sorauren near Pamplona on 28 and again on 30 July and won hard-fought victories. On 2 August the French retreated, ceding the initiative to Wellington.
