Battle of Vimy Ridge

Vimy Ridge, Battle of

Vimy Ridge, Battle of (World War I) (9–14 Apr. 1917) A ridge, lying north-east of Arras in France, had been occupied by the Germans in 1914 and had long resisted French attacks. On 9 April, Canadian troops under Lieutenant-General Julian Byng, launched a massive artillery barrage and then attacked with four divisions. They took ‘Hill 145’ and then gained the long ridge itself, capturing 4,000 German prisoners. In holding the ridge for the next few days, casualties mounted, reaching one in ten of the 100,000 Canadian troops involved. It became a key defensive position against the German offensive on Arras and Amiens in March 1918.
