Towton, Battle of

Towton, Battle of (29 March 1461) A desperate encounter near Tadcaster in Yorkshire in a snowstorm between the army of the newly crowned EDWARD IV and the retreating Lancastrian forces of Queen MAR-GARET OF ANJOU and HENRY VI. The armies were large (the Lancastrians numbered over 22,000) and the losses on both sides were heavy, but in a late reverse the Lancastrians were routed and some of their ablest leaders killed.
