Tenerife, battle of

Tenerife, battle of, 1657. On 20 April 1657 Blake won his last great victory, attacking a force of sixteen Spanish vessels at harbour in Santa Cruz, protected by shore batteries. Every enemy vessel was destroyed and all Blake's ships, some of them badly damaged, survived. The crushing blow helped to bring the long war to an end.
