Stones River, Battle of
Stones River, Battle of also known as the Battle of Murfreesboro this 1862–63 campaign cost each side a third of its men, as the North emerged with a morale-boosting triumph after a recent string of defeats. Under Gen. Braxton Bragg, the Confederates attacked quickly on December 31, but after initial retreat, the Union army held for two bitterly cold days that exhausted both sides. On January 2, Union Maj. Gen. William S. Rosecrans advanced across Stones River, while his superior artillery parried the counterattack. News of Union reinforcements sent the Confederates retreating several miles south, but Rosencrans stayed, fortifying Murfreesboro. Neither depleted side fought again for almost six months.
