Stirling Bridge, battle of

Stirling Bridge, battle of, 1297. Edward I's victory at Dunbar in 1296 did not keep Scotland subdued for long. On 11 September 1297 a large English army, under John de Warenne, earl of Surrey, and Hugh de Cressingham, was caught by William Wallace crossing a narrow bridge over the Forth near Stirling. Cressingham was killed and Edward's conquest had to begin again.

Stirling Bridge, battle of

Stirling Bridge, battle of, 1297. Edward I's victory at Dunbar in 1296 did not keep Scotland subdued for long.
