Battle of Steenkirk

Steenkirk, battle of

Steenkirk, battle of, 1692. William III, defending Brussels against the French, launched a surprise attack on 3 August on Marshal Luxembourg, who was separated from Boufflers. William made use of a discovered spy to gain a temporary advantage but Boufflers's troops joined in at the end of the day. The struggle was bloody but inconclusive and the Dutch commander Solms was much blamed for not bringing his men to help the British. William confided to Heinsius, ‘you can easily understand how much it grieves me that I have not been able to do better.’
