Slioch, battle of
Slioch, battle of, 1307. The first of two battles which confirmed Robert I, king of Scots, in his position after the death of Edward I. Probably in October, Robert captured the Comyn castle of Inverlochy, near the modern Fort William, marched up the Great Glen destroying Urquhart and Inverness castles, and attacked Elgin and Banff. He then fell seriously ill and had to retreat to a more secure position at Slioch, just east of Huntly. His enemies, the earls of Buchan and Atholl, made an unsuccessful attack on Christmas Day. A second attempt on 31 December found Robert's position too strong, and he was able to withdraw to safety, and prepare for the decisive victory at Inverurie.
