Battle of Sandwich

Sandwich, battle of

Sandwich, battle of, 1217. After suffering considerable losses at the battle of Lincoln (May 1217), Prince Louis of France sent home for further reinforcements in his bid to become king of England. King Henry III's regency council realized that it was imperative to prevent these troops landing and a great sea-battle took place off Sandwich on 24 August 1217. The English sailed to windward of the French and engaged their flagship. Knights and sailors were tormented and blinded by powdered lime thrown from the English ships and carried by the wind. The flagship was boarded and overpowered. The other troopships managed to sail back to France, but the ships carrying stores were largely seized by the English. It was a decisive engagement, ending Louis's hopes in England.
