Battle of North Foreland

North Foreland, battle of

North Foreland, battle of, 1666. A major engagement in the second Anglo-Dutch War, sometimes known as the St James's Day fight, was fought on 4 and 5 August in the Thames estuary and off the Suffolk coast. This was a continuation of the battle of the Downs after each side had repaired and resupplied. Albemarle (Monck) and Prince Rupert with 89 warships were confronted by a Dutch fleet of 88 vessels under Cornelis Tromp and de Ruyter. The English had the better of the exchanges but the Dutch made harbour. Pepys's laconic comment was: ‘we keep the sea which denotes a victory, or at least that we are not beaten. But no great matter to brag on.’
