Neville's Cross, battle of

Neville's Cross, battle of, 1346. In 1346 Edward III resumed campaigning in France and in August won his great victory of Crécy. The French urged their Scottish allies to put pressure on England and in October David II led a large force across the border. On 17 October he had reached Durham and was confronted by local English forces at Neville's Cross, just to the west of the city. His adversaries were led by the archbishop of York, Ralph, Lord Neville, and Henry, Lord Percy. The Scots suffered severe losses and David II was captured. He remained a prisoner until 1357.

Neville's Cross, battle of, 1346. In 1346 Edward III resumed campaigning in France and in August won his great victory of Crécy. Neville's Cross, Battle of (17 October 1346) A major victory of the English over the Scots, near Durham. Edward III's army captured David II and obtained a large ransom for his release.
