Homildon Hill, battle of
Homildon Hill, battle of, 1402. The clash at Otterburn in 1388 was followed by a ten-year truce on the Anglo-Scottish border. In June 1402 Hotspur and March got the better of a small skirmish at Nisbet Moor, in Berwickshire. Glyndŵr's rising in Wales gave the Scots a chance of revenge and in September 1402 a large force under Douglas pillaged Northumberland. Hotspur cut off their retreat near Wooler, and Douglas fought at Homildon Hill. The Scots were badly deployed, the English archers kept up a hail of fire, and Douglas was captured.
