Germantown, Battle of
Germantown, Battle of (4 October 1777) When the British occupied Philadelphia during the American War of INDEPENDENCE the greater part of their army camped at Germantown, north of Philadelphia. After the defeat at BRANDYWINE and the British occupation of Philadelphia, George WASHINGTON attempted a surprise counter-attack on the main British camp. Bad weather and bad coordination resulted in American defeat, heavy losses, and withdrawal to winter quarters at VALLEY FORGE.

Germantown, Battle of
Germantown, Battle of a Revolutionary War battle at Germantown, Pennsylvania on October 4, 1777. Forces under the command of Gen. George Washington marched by night with the aim of a surprise attack on the British stronghold. Initial advances were successful but thick fog and smoke prevented the coordinated attack that Washington had planned, and he retreated in the end.
