Cheriton, battle of
Cheriton, battle of, 1644. After Roundway Down, Hopton and Waller continued their private struggle in Wessex, manœuvring for possession of Winchester. On 29 March they met at Cheriton, Waller with 10,000 men, Hopton with 6,000. The royalist cavalry suffered heavily when caught in deep rutted lanes and Hopton was obliged to retreat, first to Alresford, then to Winchester. The battle is sometimes known as Alresford.
