Baginbun, battle of
Baginbun, battle of, 1170. In 1169 Richard de Clare, earl of Pembroke, known as Strongbow, decided to seek territory in Ireland. A small advance party commanded by Raymond le Gros dug in on the coast at Baginbun Head, between Hook Head and Wexford, and was attacked by a vastly superior force of Norsemen and Irish. The invaders were successful. Strongbow then joined them, took Waterford and Dublin, and declared himself king of Leinster. The first English foothold in Ireland had been obtained.
