Almenara, battle of
Almenara, battle of, 1710. On the river Noguera in Aragon, on 27 July, an allied army of 24,000 troops, commanded by the Austrian Count Stahremberg, and including an English contingent under Stanhope, attacked a Spanish army of roughly equal size, commanded by General Villadarias with Philip V in attendance. Caught by surprise, the Spanish were defeated, chiefly by Stanhope's men, and the bulk of the army survived only because of the onset of night. Casualties were relatively light—about 400 allied and 1,300 Spanish. The battle marked a resurgence of allied fortunes in Aragon.
