Batalha
Batalha, Portugal ‘Battle’. This refers to the Battle of Aljubarrota in 1385 when John I (1357–1433), King of Portugal (1385–1433), defeated John I (1358–90), King of Castile (1379–90), thereby ensuring Portugal's independence. The town actually takes its name from the Dominican Abbey, Santa Maria da Vitória ‘St Mary of the Victory’ or Santa Maria da Batalha ‘St Mary of the Battle’.
