Basle

Basle

Basle (French: Bâle; German: Basel), SwitzerlandRobur, Basilia Originally a Celtic settlement and given the Roman name Robur from the Latin roburetum ‘oak grove’. The present name is derived from the Greek basileia ‘royal’, when Valentinian I (321–75), Roman emperor (364–75), developed the settlement into a fort in 374. In 1501 Basle joined the Swiss Confederation and in 1833 the canton was divided into two demi‐cantons, one urban, Basel‐Stadt, and one rural, Basel‐Landschaft, although they operate as full cantons.
