Barnstaple, England/UK Bardanstapol, Barnestaple The original Anglo‐Saxon settlement by a ford on the Taw Estuary may be named after the Bearda family who guarded the crossing to which has been added ‘staple’, a reference to the area's main product which was wool. Alternatively, the name may mean ‘Post of the Battleaxe’ in reference to a meeting place here, from stapol ‘wooden post’.
