Ballinasloe
Ballinasloe, Co. Galway, the site of Ireland's best known fair. While patents were granted for fairs on this site in the 17th century, they did not prosper until the early 18th century. There were a number of fairs in the town by the 1750s, each of which performed a different economic function. The wool fairs, for instance, attracted the Leinster and Munster wool combers in large numbers to purchase raw wool. Even in years, such as the 1770s, when the wool trade was depressed the sales at Ballinasloe continued to rise. More famous than the wool fair was the autumn horse fair which attracted purchasers from as far away as France as well as the quartermasters of the British army seeking horses. The Ballinasloe fairs were victims of the early 19th‐century trade depression and by the middle of the century had shrunk considerably in size before finally ceasing in the early 1900s. The horse fair was revived in the 1950s as part of a local festival.
