Balikpapan

Balikpapan

Balikpapan, Dutch oil port situated in the south-east corner of Dutch Borneo (see Netherlands East Indies) which was occupied by the Japanese in February 1942. The 7th Australian Division, supported by Australian, Dutch, and US air and naval units, launched an amphibious assault against it on 1 July 1945. By 9 July the division had captured the port and its two airfields, and by the time Japan surrendered in mid-August an area within 24–32 km. (15–20 mi.) of the port had been cleared. Balikpapan's capture, which cost the Australians 229 dead and 634 wounded, was the war's last large-scale operation and the largest amphibious one carried out by Australian troops.
