Balfour
Balfour surname of the Conservative statesman Arthur James Balfour (1848–1930).
Balfour Declaration a declaration in favour of a Jewish national home in Palestine, issued in 1917 by Balfour as Foreign Secretary. Mr Balfour's poodle the House of Lords; from the title of a book (1954) by Roy Jenkins, and ultimately in allusion to a speech by Lloyd George of 1907, in which he described the House of Lords as the ‘poodle’ of Balfour as Prime Minister. |
