Balcomb Greene

Greene, Balcomb

Greene, Balcomb (1904–1990). American painter, born at Niagara Falls. He began to paint seriously in 1931 without formal training, having previously studied psychology (he did postgraduate work under Freud in Vienna) and taught English literature. In 1931–3 he lived in Paris, and on his return to the USA settled in New York. By 1935 his style had become completely abstract and in 1936 he was the first chairman of the American Abstract Artists association. From 1936 to 1939 he worked for the Federal Art Project, painting several abstract murals in a severe geometrical style. In the 1940s representational elements entered his work (he sometimes showed figures fragmented against an abstract background), and from the late 1950s a new note of humanism, almost of existentialism, became apparent in many of his pictures.
