Baia Mare
Baia Mare, Romania Neustadt, Nagybánya ‘Big Mine’ in both the present name and the previous Hungarian name when the town was located in Hungary; it was transferred to Romania in 1920 after the fall of the Austro‐Hungarian Empire, retaken by the Hungarians during the Second World War and finally returned to Romania in 1947. Both the Romanian mare and the Hungarian nagy mean ‘big’; however, while the Hungarian bánya means ‘mine’, the Romanian baie actually means ‘bath’. The town was the Hungarians' chief source of gold bullion. Founded by Saxon immigrants in the 12th century, the original name meant ‘New Town’ in German.
