Bahr al-Ghazal
BAHR AL-GHAZAL
Bahr al-Ghazal (the Gazelle River) drains a basin the size of France, yet its contribution to the Nile is insignificant. Its tributaries, which come from the Congo–Nile watershed as well as from rivers of Darfur and Kordofan, are consumed by evaporation and transpiration in the great swamps along the river. The river should not be confused with the province in southern Sudan of the same name. see also kordofan; nile river. Robert O. Collins |
