Bagrationovsk
Bagrationovsk, Kaliningrad/Russia Eylau Founded in 1336 in what was then East Prussia. Eylau has a Slavonic origin with the meaning of ‘mud’ or ‘silt’ (in modern Russian, il). In 1946, after the Soviet Union had annexed the region, it was renamed after Pyotr Bagration (1765–1812), a general who distinguished himself during the Napoleonic Wars. He fought at the Battle of Eylau (February 1807) between the Russians and Prussians, and the French. It ended in stalemate, but the Russians and Prussians withdrew from the battlefield, leaving it in the possession of the French.

Bagrationovsk
Bagrationovsk , town, NW European Russia, formerly in East Prussia, on the Polish border. Its German name was Eylau or Preussisch Eylau. It is a rail terminus and has meat-processing and dairy industries. The town was founded in 1336. In Feb., 1807, it was the site of a bloody, indecisive battle between Napoleon I and the allied Russian and Prussian forces that checked Napoleon's movement toward the Russian frontier. The town is named in honor of Gen. P. I. Bagration, who distinguished himself during the battle. |
