Bagrationovsk

Bagrationovsk

Bagrationovsk, Kaliningrad/Russia Eylau Founded in 1336 in what was then East Prussia. Eylau has a Slavonic origin with the meaning of ‘mud’ or ‘silt’ (in modern Russian, il). In 1946, after the Soviet Union had annexed the region, it was renamed after Pyotr Bagration (1765–1812), a general who distinguished himself during the Napoleonic Wars. He fought at the Battle of Eylau (February 1807) between the Russians and Prussians, and the French. It ended in stalemate, but the Russians and Prussians withdrew from the battlefield, leaving it in the possession of the French.
