Enderby, Bag
Enderby, Bag, Enderby, Mavis, & Enderby, Wood Lincs. Andrebi, Endrebi 1086 (DB), Bagenderby 1291, Enderby Malbys 1302, Wodenderby 1198. Probably identical in origin with the previous name. The affix Mavis is manorial, from the Malebisse family here in the 13th cent. The affix Bag is perhaps from ME bagge ‘a bag’ used in a transferred topographical sense with reference to the shape of the village. Wood (from ME wode ‘wood’) indicates a situation in a once wooded area.
