Baader-Meinhof group

Baader-Meinhof group An anarchist West German terrorist movement, founded by Andreas Baader(b. 1943, d. 1977) and Ulrike Meinhof(b. 1934, d. 1976), which aimed to show that terrorist attacks would reveal the true repressive nature of the West German state. Despite the imprisonment of its leaders by 1975, the movement continued its actions through the abduction of the CDU leader of Berlin in 1975, and a series of killings in 1977, including the murder of the Federal Chief Prosecutor, Siegfried Buback. A turning point came in the hijacking of a German civilian aircraft to Mogadishu on 13 October 1977. This ended in disaster for the terrorists as a German special unit freed the hostages on 18 October. Baader and two other terrorist leaders were found shot in their cells, presumably having committed suicide, around seventeen months after Meinhof had taken her own life.
