BODYGUARD

BODYGUARD

BODYGUARD, codename for deception operations decided upon at the Allied Cairo conference in December 1943 (see SEXTANT). The object of BODYGUARD was to persuade the Germans that though a large-scale cross-Channel invasion was being planned it was not going to take place until the end of the summer of 1944 and that the Allies had other large-scale operations in mind elsewhere. Although various ploys were implemented, BODYGUARD failed to divert Hitler's immediate attention from the Channel coast. The codename originated from Churchill's remark at the Teheran conference in November 1943 (see Eureka) that ‘in wartime truth is so precious that she should always be attended by a bodyguard of lies’.
