Dassett, Avon & Dassett, Burton Warwicks. Derceto(ne) 1086 (DB), Auene Dercete 1202, Magna Dercet 1242, Chepynge Dorset 1397, Dassett Magna alias Burton Dassett 1604. Probably ‘oak forest’, from Celtic *derw + *cę̄d, referring to western edge of once heavily wooded district. The distinguishing affixes are from the old Celtic name of the stream here (Avon meaning ‘river, water’) and (for Burton Dassett) from Latin magna ‘great’, OE cēping ‘market’ and from a nearby place Burton (Buriton 1327, from OE burh-tūn ‘fortified farmstead’).
