Auto Sacramental

Auto Sacramental

Auto Sacramental, Spanish term for the religious play in the vernacular which derived from the Latin liturgical drama. Although its development followed in general that of the mystery play, it had by the end of the 16th century come to be recognized as a dramatic restatement of the tenets of the Catholic faith which embodied the preoccupations and ideals of the Counter-Reformation, as the later mystery plays did in Germany. In this form it provided one of the main elements in the celebrations on Corpus Christi (the Thursday after Trinity Sunday), an important feast-day on the Continent. The most distinctive feature of the auto sacramental was its use of elaborate allegory. The outstanding writer of such plays was Calderón, who from 1651 to his death in 1681 was responsible for all those staged in Madrid. Even after his death his plays were frequently revived for the Corpus Christi festival in Madrid, where they continued to be performed long after they had disappeared in France and England. They were finally prohibited by a royal edict of 1765.

auto sacramental. Spanish religious plays, somewhat analogous to the English morality plays. Their classical period was the 15th–16th cents., when they were always associated with the feast of Corpus Christi; in their later development they took the form of allegorical treatments of the mystery of the Eucharist.
