Australian Capital Territory
Australian Capital Territory (1991 pop. 276,468), 939 sq mi (2,432 sq km), SE Australia, an enclave within New South Wales, containing Canberra , capital of Australia. It was called the Federal Capital Territory until 1938. Most of the territory consists of an area formerly known as Yass-Canberra, which was ceded to the commonwealth by New South Wales in 1911. In 1915, New South Wales additionally ceded Jervis Bay , providing a potential port for Canberra. In 1988 the territory gained self-government with its own unicameral parliament, and Jervis Bay was separated from the territory. The federal government is the largest employer in the territory. Nearly all of the population lives in Canberra. |

Australian Capital Territory
Australian Capital Territory, Australia Limestone Plains Explored by Charles Throsby in 1820 and originally named by him. In 1901, with the creation of the Commonwealth of Australia, the new constitution decreed that an area at least 100 miles (160 km) from Sydney should be carved out of New South Wales and reserved for a new capital. The area was handed over in 1909 and became the Capital Territory in 1911. See Canberra.

Australian Capital Territory
Australian Capital Territory (ACT) (Commonwealth Territory) District within New South Wales but administratively independent of it. It contains the Australian capital, Canberra. The area was first settled in 1824 and was set aside as the capital territory in 1908. In 1915 an additional 72sq km (28sq mi) were added, making a total of 2432sq km (939sq mi). Pop. (2000 est.) 312,400.
