Auricular

Auricular. Style of C16 and C17 ornament made with curved, smooth, undulating forms with flowing lines and ripple-like elements reminiscent of the human ear. Called the Cartilaginous, Dutch Grotesque, Lobate, or Oleaginous style, it was found in antic, grotesque, and Mannerist ornament, and probably influenced Rococo and Art Nouveau detail.
