Augustus Montague Toplady

Toplady, Augustus Montague

Toplady, Augustus Montague (1740–78), Anglican clergyman and hymn-writer. In 1758 he adopted extreme Calvinist opinions; these are elaborated in The Historic Proof of the Doctrinal Calvinism of the Church of England (1774). He is chiefly remembered for his hymns, which include ‘Rock of Ages’.
