Auguste Sabatier , 1839-1901, French Protestant theologian. He was professor (1867-72) of reformed dogmatics at Strasbourg, and from 1877 until his death he was a member of the Protestant theological faculty of the Sorbonne, Paris. Sabatier became noted as a liberal theologian, stressing the subjective, symbolic nature of religious knowledge and the need for continual revision of religious dogmas in the light of personal experience. Among English translations of his works are The Apostle Paul (1891), Religion and Modern Culture (1897), Outlines of a Philosophy of Religion (1897), and Religions of Authority and the Religion of the Spirit (1904).

Sabatier, Auguste (1839–1901), French Protestant theologian. He propagated the theories of F. D. E. Schleiermacher and A. Ritschl in France, applied the methods of historical criticism to the NT, and, especially by his interpretation of Christian dogma as the symbolism of religious feelings, he exercised a profound influence not only on French Protestantism but also in Catholic theological circles, thus helping to prepare for the Modernist movement.
