Murphy, Arthur
Murphy, Arthur (1727–1805), English actor and dramatist, who gave up acting, for which he had no particular talent, to devote all his time to writing. His tragedy The Grecian Daughter (1772) provided Mrs Siddons with one of her favourite parts in the heroine Euphrasia, but his chief strength lay in comedy. He had little originality, but was adept at choosing and combining the best elements from the works of others, particularly Molière, and several of his works, including The Way to Keep Him (1760) and The School for Guardians (1767), contributed to the revival of the comedy of manners which culminated in Sheridan's The School for Scandal (1777).
