Morrison, Arthur (1863–1945), novelist, whose ‘realist’ tales of East End life in London were first published in Macmillan's Magazine and later collected as Tales of Mean Streets (1894). He is chiefly remembered for his novel A Child of the Jago (1896) which describes the boyhood of Dick Perrott in an East End slum and gives a vivid account of the violent crime of the neighbourhood. His father is hanged for murder and Dick dies in a street fight aged 17.
