Arnold Daly , 1875-1927, American actor, b. Brooklyn, N.Y. He first appeared on the stage in 1892. Inspired by Richard Mansfield's production of The Devil's Disciple (1897-98), Daly determined to present Shaw on the American stage, and in 1903 he came into prominence when he played successfully in Candida. His production of Mrs. Warren's Profession (1905) caused an uproar and the arrest of the principal actors, but they were immediately acquitted. The following year Daly toured with Arms and the Man and The Man of Destiny.

Daly, (Peter Christopher) Arnold (1875–1927), American actor, who came into prominence in 1903 with the first public performance in New York of Candida, which he directed as well as playing Marchbanks, at a special matinée. This was the first production in the United States of a play by Shaw since Mansfield's tour of The Devil's Disciple in 1897, and Daly followed its success with a production of Mrs Warren's Profession which led to an uproar and prosecution by the police. In spite of this he produced You Never Can Tell, Candida, John Bull's Other Island, Arms and the Man, and a double bill consisting of The Man of Destiny and a trifle written specially for him by Shaw, How He Lied to Her Husband. He also played this last sketch in vaudeville. Opposition to the new ‘theatre of ideas’ finally defeated him and he was forced back into run-of-the-mill work, dying in a fire in his early fifties.

Goatcher, Philip W.

Goatcher, Philip W. (1852–1931), designer. The son of a London scene painter, he served his apprenticeship under his father, then worked in Australia before coming to America in 1875. After several seasons at the Park Theatre, he became the principal set designer at Wallack's. Among his many notable achievements were the settings for the William H. Crane– Stuart Robson The Comedy of Errors (1878), such Wallack productions as The Silver King (1883) and Hoodman Blind (1885), the musical The Lady or the Tiger? (1888), and Arnold Daly's 1889 revival of As You Like It. Of his work for Hoodman Blind, the Times noted, “The views of English rural scenery by Mr. Philip Goatcher are full of mellow beauty: A moonlit grove, with a rustic stile and winding pathway, is notable for excellent perspective; the Thames Embankment scene, showing the Egyptian Column, the semicircle of lights, and the ‘dark, flowing’ river called forth a storm of cheers when displayed.” After losing a divorce case in 1890, he returned to England, then moved to Australia, where he remained an important scene painter until just before World War I.
